The Flick: Having come off a dismal theatrical showing, I was very curious to see what was ‘wrong’ with “The Finest Hours.”  And for those on such a journey, it’s somewhat disappointing as the film is a decent drama.  Taking on a true story of a daring Coast Guard rescue, the film has all the hero movie tropes that make it worth checking out – memorable characters (loved Casey Affleck’s sullen engine room dude!), harrowing settings and underdogs to root for. The only problem with “The Finest Hours” is that it is a tad formulaic in its delivery of said story, giving a feeling of familiarity that more advanced audiences may have found tedious, but all in all, a tale well worth telling.

Best Feature: ‘Against All Odds: The Bernie Webber Story’ goes into detail the real-life events that inspired the film – great stuff.

Best Hidden Gem: Beau Knapp of “What Lola Wants” fame plays a small but cool role as Chris Pine’s wingman buddy Mel.

Worth the Moola: A good movie just a tad behind its time – if this had been made in the 80’s it would have been a hit.
