Ghostbusters & Lyft Team for Free Ecto-1 Rides at Comic-Con

Over the 4th of July holiday weekend, Sony Pictures partnered up with the ride-sharing service Lyft to offer free rides in the Ecto-1 to promote Ghostbusters, which hit theaters last weekend. The promotion was only available in five cities across the country, but now fans who are attending San Diego Comic-Con this week will be able to get in on the fun. Lyft heard from San Diegans loud and clear that they wanted a chance to experience Ghost Mode, so they’re bringing the Ecto-1 back to life, and just in time for Comic-Con.

The Lyft Ghost Mode will be available to all users at Comic-Con, which runs from Thursday, July 21 through Sunday, July 24. Ghost Mode will only be available from 11 AM to 7 PM local time. Passengers can toggle into Ghost Mode on Lyft and request a free ride in an Ecto-1 car from the Ghostbusters movie. Ghost Mode will feature the original Ecto-1 as well as custom replicas. All rides are free, but Lyft can’t guarantee they won’t be spooky!

The Ghost Mode Ecto-1 will be at the Seaport Village parking lot (849 West Harbor Dr., San Diego, CA 92101) tonight for a sneak preview. Of course, since Ghostbusters has already hit theaters, and is faring well at the box office, it won’t have an official presence at the convention itself, but fans will be able to celebrate this all-female reboot through this new Lyft promotion. Of course, it’s possible that Sony could use the convention to make a surprise announcement about a sequel, but that’s only speculation.

Over the weekend, Sony Pictures distribution chief Rory Bruer confidently proclaimed that Ghostbusters 2 is “definitely happening,” although nothing has been officially announced from the studio quite yet. While we don’t know for sure, it seems likely that the four main stars, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones will return, along with their secretary, played by Chris Hemsworth. It’s certainly possible that writer-director Paul Feig and his co-writer Katie Dippold will return for this follow-up as well, but that remains to be seen.

Sony Pictures has already set up an animated movie for this burgeoning Ghostbusters franchise, along with an animated TV series, which is slated to debut in 2018. As for the live action movie sequel, it isn’t known when that may hit theaters, but if Ghostbusters continues to perform well at the box office, perhaps we’ll find out sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for more updates from this growing Ghostbusters universe.
