Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Director Drops Doctor Strange & Baby Groot Hints

With the sequel now in post-production, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 wrapped this past July just as it was heading to Comic-Con. While in San Diego, director of the Marvel sequel, James Gunn decided to reveal quite a bit including some never-before-seen clips and a teaser trailer that revealed the identity of Star-Lord’s dad. Though, more questions were raised than answered. As he’s often known to do, Gunn returned to Facebook early today to provide a few more tidbits, drop more clues and provoke even more questions.

In speaking about this follow-up to the gargantuan 2014 blockbuster hit Guardians of the Galaxy, Gunn did hint that the movie has a strong connection to this November’s other Phase 3 adventure Doctor Strange. He doesn’t come right out and say that Doctor Strange or any of the other characters from that movie will make an appearance in Guardians 2. He instead made it clear that no other new characters not yet known will be revealed at this time.

“I think we’ve given out the people that are in ‘Guardians 2’ that we’re going to give out so far.”

It’s quite clear that there is a ton about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that we won’t get to learn until the movie is in theaters. But one thing is becoming quite clear. Baby Groot is probably going to stay a baby through the duration of the sequel. Gunn pretty much confirms that fact.

“Don’t expect baby Groot to do too much changing in the second movie.”

The story in Vol. 2 picks up exactly two months after the events seen in Vol. 1. We do know that Sylvester Stallone is playing a mystery character. And it was revealed in San Diego that Kurt Russell is playing Ego the Living Planet, Star-Lord’s father, who has taken on human form. While Vin Diesel felt free enough to confirm that the entire Guardians crew would be suited back up and shipping out for Avengers: Infinity War, James Gunn is staying quite on that front.

Just recently, an intriguing piece of fan art was revealed for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which shows the team going up against a toothy, furry, tentacled monster in the deeper cosmos of outer space. This beast might actually have a strong connection to Doctor Strange, tying the worlds together. The monster is known as an Abilisk. About the deadly looking alien, Gunn says this.

“[It’s] a multidimensional being. The Guardians have been hired to fight him.”

It is well known that Doctor Strange will be exploring multi-dimensions and alternate universes. And a recent Lego toy set teased a similar looking creature as to what will be unleashed in Guardians. Lego called their version of the monster a Portal Beast. And it might be the exact same creature. James Gunn did go onto talk a little bit more about Ego the Living Planet, revealing that it was Chris Pratt’s idea to cast Kurt Russell. The director tells this to Empire.

“He was actually not in my head initially, but one day Chris suggested him, and I would have been really disappointed if he’d said no. Hey, if you have to cast anything, Kurt’s a pretty good way to go.”

At this time, James Gunn still doesn’t know if he’ll be back to director Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That sequel has already been confirmed to be part of the Marvel Phase 4 line-up. But with the Guardians heading to earth in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s clear their path will be changed in new and unexpected ways. The Guardians we know now won’t be the same when they return in the next decade. You can watch James Gunn’s video here.
