A shocking trend has emerged in several European countries involving groups of people who have sex parties where one anonymous invitee carries HIV. The supposed thrill of possibly becoming infected with the incurable sexually-transmitted virus has made these parties a hit among certain groups.
Dubbed “sex roulette” parties after the similarly risky game of Russian roulette, the existence of these orgies has confirmed by a number of doctors in Barcelona.
Similar occurrences have been reported in Serbia and are most often attributed to wealthy social circles. According to Dr. Josep Mallolas, who works for Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic, the new trend shows that many have “lost respect” for HIV and the immense threat it poses to those who have unprotected sex.
According to Mallolas, a number of different variations of these sex parties have been found to take place. “There are all kinds: parties that are actual sex roulettes, or encounters that you cannot attend if you are not infected with HIV,” he told El Periódico.
At other parties, attendees take anti-viral medication before knowingly having sex with HIV-positive people in order to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus.
A Serbian stripper named Tijana claimed last year that the practice originated among Serbian elite. “This bizarre variation that seems popular for extreme sex. People who turn up for the party wear masks, and one of them has HIV,” she said. “The wealthy organize these sex parties for other rich people. The real kick for these people is apparently the risk that they might be the one having sex with the HIV-infected partner.”
