For Today in Conspiracy Corner we go to outer space. For the past several years asteroid mining companies like Planetary Resources have been saying that they aim to make a staple of science fiction a reality. In the near future they claim it will be possible to mine near Earth asteroids using robots, thus harnessing natural resources in the solar system for the benefit of all mankind. And then we have a happy utopian Star Trek civilization, yay! Right?
Well now NASA is actually planning a mission to an asteroid that is filled to the brim with precious metals including nickel and iron. Experts estimate that the giant space rock could be worth upwards of $10,000 quadrillion. This would crash the price of precious metals and send the world economy into chaos.
The asteroid in question 16 Psyche is 230 million miles away from Earth, in the large asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. The 130 mile wide rock is thought by scientists to have possibly even been a full planet that was broken apart early on in the formation of our solar system. At least that is what the scientists want us to think.
Now the folks at NASA plan to launch a mission to the valuable asteroid in the year 2023. While the European space agency landed a probe on a comet in 2014, NASA previously landed the NEAR spacecraft on the asteroid Eros in 2001. The space agency claims that the mission will be to study the core of the asteroid in an attempt to gain a better understanding of planet formation. This includes how they separate into layers during their early formation process. However some have pointed out the more sinister potential for the mission.
If NASA could harness the asteroid and mine it for all of the resources inside, the United States government would be in a position to control the price of commodities on a global scale. If suddenly rare earth metals are no longer rare, it would devalue all holdings of world governments and companies invested in those resources. This would lead to imminent worldwide economic collapse. Dr. Elkins Tanton said of the asteroid situation;
“Could you kind of sit on it and hide it and control the global resource – kind of like diamonds are controlled corporately – and protect your market? What if you decided you were going to bring it back and you were just going to solve the metal resource problems of humankind for all time?”
If things go smoothly the NASA probe could arrive at the 16 Psyche asteroid in the year 2030.
Which brings up the question; will this asteroid trigger the collapse of the world economy or give the United States unimaginable control over it?
