Sony’s The Crow remake now officially has a 2019 release date, which is pretty amazing. The idea of another Crow movie has been tossed around forever with all kinds of studios and actors attached to the project. When it was announced that Jason Momoa was going to play the lead, many fans didn’t believe that it was going to happen after getting burned so many times before. However, a little ray of sunshine poked through the clouds late last year when it was confirmed that The Crow reboot would begin production this year under the direction of Corin Hardy.
Sony has announced that The Crow reboot will officially hit theaters on October 11th, 2019. The project was dropped months ago by Relativity Media after working on it for years. Sony was quick to snatch up the property and soon Jason Momoa and Corin Hardy were on board with the promise that something big was going to happen soon by The Crow creator James O’Barr. O’Barr is going to be heavily involved in the project and he mentioned late last year that production would begin sometime in 2018.
Pre-production for The Crow reboot is reportedly underway currently and it should come as a welcome relief to skeptical fans that James O’Barr is heavily involved. Many fans are highly protective of The Crow franchise and don’t want to see anything tarnish the legacy of the late Brando Lee, who was tragically killed on the set of the original movie in 1994. They’ve definitely had a long time to mull over the details of what this reboot will be about, so it will be interesting to see what the end result is. No matter what, hardcore fans will have their arms crossed and ready to tear the movie apart when October 11th, 2019 rolls around.
As far as the storyline goes, nothing has been officially confirmed. The Crow reboot is reportedly an R-rated revenge movie, which could mean any number of things. Additionally, the project has changed hands so many times that even if story reports were around, they’d more than likely be outdated. The R-rating was one of the reason that creator James O’Barr agreed to work on the project, believing that it was the only way to properly tell the story.
Original director of The Crow, Alex Proyas, has lobbied for the reboot not to happen. Proyas believes that The Crow is Brandon Lee’s movie and that it should remain that way. The director has spoken out a number of times over the years whenever the subject of a new Crow project was brought up. He has called the idea of the reboot “unnecessary,” and wants the original to be “Brandon’s legacy.” Some fans tend to agree with Alex Proyas, but it looks like The Crow reboot is finally about to happen this time. Hopefully it can pay tribute to Brandon Lee while doing its own thing to please hardcore fans as well as invite new fans. The report originated from Sony Pictures.
