Garfield cartoon creator Jim Davis gave his lasagna-loving cat a “male” gender identity after a Wikipedia editing scuffle broke out last week on the user sourced encyclopedia site.
Davis’s need to clear the air stemmed from a recently unearthed quote from 2014 where he said his nap-loving, coffee guzzling feline is “not really male or female.”
Now that that mystery has been solved and we know Garfield is as male as a large horned bull wearing a “Big Dogs” t-shirt, we figured this would be a good time to figure out the genders of some of our other cartoon favorites.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Male
This one should be pretty obvious. In the television show theme song they are referred to as “turtle boys” in the lyric “These turtle boys don’t cut ’em no slack.” This song was written by Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, so we can thank him for clearing this one up for us and for his excellent show Mike and Molly.
Wilma Flintstone – Female
Though there isn’t any indisputable proof of Wilma’s gender on The Flinstones, she prefers female pronouns and is in what appears to be a standard cisgender relationship with her husband Fred. The Flinstones was created in the 1950s, so it’s easy to assume that she is the gender that we assume her to be. The jury is still out on their dinosaur pet Dino though.
Nermal – Transgendered Woman
Now here’s where things get a little tricky. Nermal is referred to as a “he” in the official Garfield Wikipedia entries. He was originally voiced by a female voice actor. He lacks the stereotypical “deep male” voice of Garfield and with his large, pronounced eye lashes it seems as if he is in some ways feminized. With this information, we can only assume that Nermal is a transgendered woman who doesn’t feel comfortable coming out to her friends and still feels in some ways ostracized by the Garfield universe for her true identity. Maybe, in the future she will feel comfortable for being herself, but today is not that day in the hate filled Garfield universe. Today is not that day at all.
Superman – Non Binary
Superman has the word “man” in his name, so his gender classification should be obvious, but as an alien from a planet several light years away, we can’t be so sure of how many genders Krypton even has. In this situation, Ze is probably most appropriate and the safest bet because I don’t want to misgender someone that could literally punch a hole in the sun.
Optimus Prime – Robot Truck
Optimus Prime is a robot that turns into a truck. I don’t know what you where expecting here.
Toad – ???
I have no idea what Toad from Mario Brothers gender is. Technically they are part mushroom I guess? Do mushrooms even have genders? If you have any theories on Toad’s gender, let us know in the comments.
