Yesterday, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi took a break in the production to answer questions from the fans during a Reddit AMA session. While there were some questions about his popular indie comedies such as What We Do In the Shadows and this year’s Hunt For the Wilderpeople, a majority of the questions were about his Marvel Phase 3 adventure. The filmmaker revealed some very interesting tidbits of information, such as how he essentially “ignored” Thor and Thor: The Dark World while making this movie. Here’s what he
“I made an effort to ignore the fact there are other Thor films. I honestly know NOTHING outside of what I’m doing. I’m trying to ignore the rest of the universe and just make my own awesome movie.
Taika Waititi also directed a widely beloved short film that “explains” what happened to Thor while almost every other Marvel hero was battling each other in Captain America: Civil War. The short featured Chris Hemsworth as Thor, with Daley Pearson playing Daryl Jacobson, Thor’s roommate. The director teased that fans may get to see Daryl again, and that there are parts of that short film that could be part of a “bigger thing.” When asked about whether or not he’d like to continue making these shorts with Thor and Daryl, the director had this to say.
“That would be a dream come true. I’d love to actually make a bunch of them.
While several of the Thor franchise mainstays are returning in Thor: Ragnarok, such as Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Idris Elba (Heimdall), this sequel will also bring Thor’s fellow Avenger Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) into the fold, along with new cast members such as Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Cate Blanchett (Hela), Karl Urban (Skurge) and Jeff Goldblum (The Grandmaster). The director also teased that there is one other MCU character he wanted to showcase in Thor: Ragnarok, but it couldn’t be worked out. Here’s what he had to say about bringing in John C. Reilly’s Rhomann Dey from Guardians of the Galaxy.
“I would have liked to get John C Reilly’s character in the film but there was no real way to pull it off.”
Thor: Ragnarok has been said to follow a “cosmic road trip” that Thor and Hulk go on, which lead to some speculation that characters from Guardians of the Galaxy could surface in Thor: Ragnarok, or that Thor could surface in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Production is still under way on Thor: Ragnarok, which has been set for release on November 3, 2017.
