'Top Gear' News: Amazon Show Gets Name, BBC Series Gets Premiere Date

The Grand Tour

Top Gear fans had dueling announcements this week, as Jeremy Clarkson and company finally revealed the name of their new Amazon Prime series on the same day that BBC America nailed down the US premiere date for the remade Top Gear.

Amazon has confirmed that the name of Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May’s series will be The Grand Tour, and issued the very first press photo for the project (which you can see above).

The name is a nod toward the fact that each of the episodes will be from different locations around the world – including a truly worldwide studio audience, as Amazon will be selecting audience members from a sweepstakes later this summer.

Even the press release was full of the presenters’ usual tongue in cheek humor. Here’s an excerpt:

“Thing is,” said Jeremy Clarkson, “We’ll be travelling the world hosting each episode in a different country, from a giant tent. It’s a sort of “grand tour,” if you like. So we’ve decided to call it ‘The Grand Tour.’”

James May admitted to being underwhelmed by the name. “I wanted to call it ‘Nigel,’ or ‘Roger.’ We needed a name, and they’re names.”

Not to be outdone by Clarkson, Hammond and May, BBC America chose the exact same day as Amazon to declare a premiere date for Chris Evans’ edition of Top Gear. That will launch on Monday, May 30 at 9 p.m. – the exact same time slot of its previous version.

The premiere will be followed immediately by the new after-show Extra Gear. You can find out more details about that here.

And just because we can, here again is a video of Clarkson shamelessly plugging for Amazon in the most hilarious way – this time for the “Amazon Prime Air” drone delivery service. No one does commercials quite like Clarkson (except for maybe Hammond, who does a ton of them).

What do you think of the Amazon show’s name? Are you happy that Top Gear now has a premiere date? Give us your opinion on this latest news in the comments.
