Trainspotting 2 Trailer Announces Cast & Start of Production

‘Choose life. Choose hope. Choose faith. Choose each new dawn as a chance to bring good into the world. Choose friendship. Love. Happiness. Clean living and positive thinking. Yeah. Right.’ Sony Pictures Releasing UK announced today the start of production on Trainspotting 2. To celebrate the beginning of this shoot, which takes place on location in Scotland, Sony has released an announcement tailer. Head back to 1996 with director Danny Boyle and the original cast.

No new footage is revealed in this sneak peek at the hugely anticipated sequel. It brings the gift of nostalgia with a quick montage of footage from the original Trainspotting. Back in action are Ewan McGregor as Renton, Ewen Bremner as Spud, Johnny Lee Miller as Sick Boy and Robert Carlyle as Begbie. Though not confirmed in this teaser, Kelly MacDonald is also reprising her role as Diane. Kevin McKidd is the only cast member from Trainspotting who won’t be back in front of the camera. And for good reason. His character Tommy passed away in the first movie.

This announcement trailer claims shooting starts today, May 16. But last week we saw that Ewen Bremner and his iconic yellow glasses were already back on set. The sequel is currently shooting in both Leith and Gorgie, Scotland. Along with the teaser, you can see some of the set images below.

The screenplay for Trainspotting 2 is based on author Irvine Welsh’s follow-up novel to Trainspotting titled Porno. But Boyle has decided against using that as the title of his sequel for good reason. The movie will be a loose adaptation of the source material. But a different title will also clear up any confusion for those searching the movie on the Internet. According to this sneak peek, the new title may be T2 but that could change before the sequel hits theaters.

In Porno, Sick Boy returns to Edinburgh with plans to make a porn movie with the help of his friend Renton. But Begbie is hellbent on seeking revenge against the two after being released from prison. And Spud gets wrapped up in the whole mess, playing both sides. It isn’t known how much this new story will deviate from the book, or how differently things will play out in the end.

Trainspotting 2 hits UK theaters January 27, 2017, though an official U.S. release date has yet to be announced. TriStar Pictures recently announced they were releasing the movie in the States. Andrew Macdonald, Danny Boyle, Christian Colson, and Bernie Bellew are producing through Figment Films, Decibel Films, and Cloud Eight Films. Film4 is also involved in the production. Trainspotting 2 will celebrate the 21st birthday of the original film. Take a look at the teaser, and party like it’s 1996 all over again.
