If you’re lucky enough to be the sole winner of Saturday night’s $314 million Powerball jackpot winner, you won’t take home the entire jackpot amount if you want a lump sum payment.
A one-time payout is based on the cash value of the jackpot — $204.7 million. According to USA Mega, approximately 25 percent of the prize will be withheld for federal taxes, leaving the winner with $153,525,000.
A percentage of the prize will also be withheld for state taxes as well unless you live in a state that doesn’t tax lottery winnings — California, Delaware, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming.
Powerball jackpot winners can also choose a 30-year annuity based on the full jackpot amount. Choosing this option would result in an yearly payment of approximately $10,466,667 before taxes.
Powerball tickets are sold at convenience stores, liquor stores, supermarkets, and ticket kiosks at lottery retailers in 44 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
